310 brings the Westside to mind. But its story also reaches the South Bay and Catalina Island. And along the way, it changed how California added area codes.

The story begins in 1991, when 310 split from 213. Los Angeles needed more phone numbers, and a new code gave part of the region a new identity.

In 1997, 310 was divided again. Long Beach and the eastern part of its territory moved into 562. The familiar three digits now covered a smaller region.

Today, think of places such as Malibu, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, and Culver City. Then head south toward El Segundo, Redondo Beach, and Torrance. These are parts of the 310 and 424 story.

There is an island chapter too. Catalina Island, including Avalon, belongs to the same area code region. That is why the story stretches beyond the mainland and across the water.

As more numbers were needed, regulators considered another split. That would have required some existing customers to change area codes. Instead, California ultimately chose a different approach.

On August twenty sixth, 2006, new numbers could begin using 424. It was California's first area code overlay: two codes covering the same geographic region.

The overlay let existing customers keep their numbers. Two neighboring businesses could now have different area codes without being in different area code regions. Both 310 and 424 belong here.

The wider Los Angeles area has other codes too. Central Los Angeles uses 213, 323, and 738. The San Fernando Valley has 818 and 747. Long Beach uses 562. Location matters when choosing your number.

Adding 424 expanded the supply of phone numbers for the region. It did not create extra combinations within 310 itself. Each area code has its own set of possible numbers.

For a business or a personal number, 310 can carry a familiar connection to this part of Los Angeles. The rest of the number matters just as much.

Compare the whole number. Repeating digits, alternating pairs, or a round ending can each create a different rhythm. Say it aloud and choose the pattern that feels right to you.
